Glee's Pianist: Brad Ellis

GLEE certainly knows they have a money maker. Barely a month after the first half of season 1 aired on FOX, the DVD is out. Of course I had to run out and buy it. I love watching some of the musical numbers over and over. Certain ones, like the mash up of 'Walking On Sunshine' and 'Halo' I previously skipped past are now my favorites.

Someone making an impact on me during my second viewing is Brad Ellis. I barely noticed Brad the first time round, but now his facial expressions are a highlight of each episode. Brad has had more screen time than some of the main cast members, yet has not to my knowledge actually been given a line. Entertainment Weekly even picked up on Brad's facial expressions and did a short article about him.

Ellis has composed or played piano for many TV shows and films, including Gilmore Girls, Close to Home, Delovely and the DVD special features for Beauty and the Beast. He also has had a long association with the continuously evolving Off-Broadway satirical revue Forbidden Broadway. Brad has worked with everyone from Jason Alexander, Victor Garber and Billy Joel to name a few. Lovin some Brad!

Kudos to 'Felicity'

Back in 1998, ‘Felicity’ premiered on The WB. Felicity was created by Matt Reeves and an unknown JJ Abrams who up until that point had written a few screenplays, including some blockbusters such as ‘Armageddon’and ‘JoyRide’ but Felicity was the first time he produced a series for television.

Felicity’s star was the wonderful Keri Russell (one of a few women I would love to sleep with), Scott Foley and the soft spoken Scott Speedman. (The DVD commentaries have lots of mentions of his ‘whisper acting’).

The show ran for 4 seasons on the WB going off the air in 2002. Most of the cast has continued to work steadily on film and on television. Like most shows (for some reason particularly with the WB) I watched not one second of the show when it aired.

A couple of years ago I saw season 1 on sale in a bargin bin and picked it up for ten bucks. The show began with the interesting premise of Felicity at her graduation from high school. After the ceremony, Felicity speaks for the first time to the guy she has crushed over for years. Ben (Speedman) speaks to her as if they are closer than they are and writes something in Felicity’s yearbook that turns her life into a totally different direction.

Without family support, Felicity changes her plans for university and follows Ben to school in New York. When the two meet in New York he has no idea what brought her to the city and how much of an impact she is going to have on his life.

As last year approached I began going through my DVD’s and books and decided to sell some on Ebay or give away. All 4 seasons of ‘Felicity’ was put into my sell pile. I decided to stick in season 1 to watch one more time before I sold it and currently am wrapped up in the love triangle of Felicity, Ben and Noel (Foley) all over again.

If you have not seen it, are a lover of good television and a sucker for a somewhat soapy drama I encourage you to give ‘Felicity’ a shot. As season 3 and 4 went on the show became more like the other mainstream WB teen dramas, but in it’s first couple of years it was uniquely different. Felicity, either due to budget constraints or because of a creative decision did not use much of the manipulation techniques most shows used. There was music, very good music, but it does not blare over scenes and does not get louder to create drama. The music for the most part is subtle and in fact it is almost shocking how much silence the show was able to air. Awkward moments are awkwardly silent and none of the characters are let off the hook by music cues.

Below: Ian Gomez

Below: Amanda Foreman

With the exception of a few New York location shots, the sets are not elaborate. A few classrooms, a few dorm rooms are the setting for most of the story. The wardrobe (unlike say a Gossip Girl) is done for story, meaning you barely notice or care what the characters are wearing. The characters parents for the most part make enough money to send them to school, but there are no kids here sliding through life on a trust fund. They work, they study they work their way through life.

‘Felicity’ was cast exceptionally well. Russell is a beauty for sure, but this cast is a group of actors. You can almost see them wincing when they have to say the odd line that is out of sinc with the story. Scott Foley and Scott Speedman are perfectly cast as the men in her life, and given the three are involved in a triangle for much of the shows run, it is a testament to the writers that I , like Felicity struggled to decide who I thought she should be with. Ultimately I joined camp Noel, but it was a tough race.

As for the supporting cast, Greg Grunberg and Amanda Foreman were certainly my favorites and stood out as the wonderfully written Meagan and Sean. It is quite something to watch Foreman in season 1 knowing how much her character grows as the show went further. Amy Jo Johnson and Tangi Miller are well suited for their roles but the writers seemed to struggle maintaining their strength and both female characters suffered over the course of the show. Ian Gomez (currently on Cougar Town) and Rob Benedict are also wonderful in their roles.

Given that J.J Abrams (from Lost, Alias and of course last years Star Trek) is behind the scenes, you can bet the show has an originally you might not have first expected.

Kudos to Heather Heather Morris

You know I love me some Glee! Don't you just LOVE LOVE LOVE Brittany! Even though she gets only a few lines per episode, Heather Elizabeth Morris makes the most of them providing some of the shows biggest laughs. Her facial expressions during the show are also worthy of watching. She cracks me up! Hopefully there will be a 'Brittany' themed episode in the future. The is one 'Brittany' with talent!

Monday's Accidentally On Purpose Update:

Thought I would post one more time and encourage anyone who has not sampled 'Accidentally On Purpose' on CBS a try to give it a shot. Last weeks show was hilarious and I was surprised how far creator Claudia Lonow and the writers were able to take the weed storyline. In most shows (Think That 70's Show) weed smoking is not taked about as directly as the it was on 'Accidentally'. It was refreshing, but I wondered if the network had many notes on it.

Jenna Elfman and Jon Foster continue to charm and Lennon Parham and Nicolas Wright really got a chance to show off their comic chops. As much as I love me some Jon Foster, Nicholas is also more than crush worthy. Also got a great guest shot by actor Michael Rapaport who I have loved since 'Beautiful Girls'.

Accidentally had more reason to celebrate last week with a 5 episode pick up (4 short of a full season ) and a People's choice award nomination for new comedy. Congrats AOP!

Kudos to GLEE

Not sure I have seen a better hour of television than this weeks GLEE. Hilarious, touching, heartbreaking and sexy all rolled into one amazing show. The muscial numbers were all stand outs as well. 'Wheels' was one of the shows best thus far, and that is saying something. Although the entire cast was amazing, special shout out to writer Ryan Murrphy, director Paris Barclay and cast members Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch, Mike O'Malley, Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz (go Arte and Tina).

If have not yet tried GLEE, relax and don't try. Wait til December when the first half of the season comes out on DVD and enjoy a marathon.

Kudos to Saturday Night Live and Taylor Swift

Well I sat down to watch The Wanda Sykes show on Saturday and sadly was a bit disappointed. I LOVE Wanda and was really hoping for a hilarious hour. Well I did find myself laughing but not nearly enough. The problem was that it seemed the only theme the writers could come up with to discuss was Obama and it became old pretty quickly. I have faith this show will improve, just hope FOX and the audience gives it some time.

On the plus side, I did turn the channel (and taped the second half hour of Wanda) to enjoy and hour and a half of hilarious Saturday Night Live! SNL is hit and miss these days with great shows and lame ones, rarely do we get two shows in a row with laughs a plenty.

Taylor Swift was a great host. Not only did she handle her musical duties professionally, but she proved to be a decent enough actress to hold her own with the SNL vets. I was pleasantly surprised that Kayne only got two brief mentions. I had expected SNL to go to town with that story, but thankfully they let it rest.

I am sure I am not alone in crushing after Taylor Swift, but not sure about the rest of you but I also have a crush on SNL's Bill Hader. It was great to see he was featured prominently on Saturday's show. I love Hader and find he can bring laughs out of even the weakest written skits.

Highlights of the show were the 'Twilight' take off, the View (the actress doing Walters was superb) and Weekend update. Seth Meyers was on his game and not only did we get Amy Poehler back for 'Really' we also got a hilarious bit about those Sarah Mclaughlin animal commercials.

SNL needs to sit current 'it' girl Kristen Wig out a few more skits per show, but I forgive them this past weekend as the show, like Andy Samberg's new haircut, were great! Kudos SNL!

Easy to Assemble: The Series - Created By: Illeana Douglas

A couple of months ago I wrote a review of 'Totally Confused' a movie I very much related to and enjoyed written and directed by Greg Pritikin. In keeping up with Greg's projects I came across Easy To Assemble' the web series he directs which is created and written by the wonderful Illeana Douglas. I have been a fan (one of the two...) of Illeanna's since seeing her early work in 'Cape Fear', 'Jungle Fever' and her superb turn in 'To Die For'. Illeanna and Greg had previous worked together on 'Dummy' (2002) and I was excited to give 'Easy To Assemble' a go.

'Easy To Assemble' is hard to to describe to the non viewer. It reminds me somewhat of a reality show (think The Comeback), as well as a documentary. It also somehow reminds me of some of my favorite British comedies.

Above: Illeana Douglas

Illeana Douglas is tired of show business. 'It was fun to be famous when no one was famous....Now everyone is famous'. Illeana tries to leave the business and takes a job at Ikea. Seems there is a market in finding work for actors tired of the business. In one of best installments in the first season, a group gets together in a support group for actors who have left the business and who are working in places like Ikea and supermarkets.

Actors have many more choices today than in the past. When a tv star in the 70's could not get a show they had 'The Love Boat' and 'Battle of The Network Stars' to fall back on. Today they have reality shows and the Internet. Illeana blends many truths about celebrity within her stories. There are so many interesting points in 'Easy'. So many great ones that 'Easy' could easily fill up much more time.

Above: Justine Bateman.

I really am enjoying 'Easy To Assemble' and I recommend you giving it a shot! I would only watch one or two installments a day though as I found I was missing many good things by watching too many at once. Now that I am caught up I can watch them as they air each week. Although many are close to 10 minutes long, some were quite short around the 2 minute mark. Some, like Illeana's wonderful dream dance in Ikea could have used a bit more time.

The show boasts the best of the best of character actors. Jane Lynch, so hot now in 'Glee' pops up for a few episodes along with Justine Bateman, Robert Mailhouse, Cheri Oteri, Greg Proops, Tom Arnold, Ricki Lake and Jeff Goldblum to name just a few.

It is somewhat surprising to me how the Ikea company has supported the show. Maybe they have not quite gotten the metaphor of Ikea within the story and in Illeana's writing. Maybe that is just as well. Ikea is to furniture what 'Big Brother' is to prime time drama. Unoriginal, cheap and easy to produce.

'Easy To Assemble' has many ways to watch it's episodes. I am linking HERE to the main site but I found the easiest was viewing via Youtube. You can also check out the great 'Easy' Facebook site HERE: The show has a ton of sites and blogs to accompany your viewing including Justine Bateman's 40 & Bitter Blog.

FIGHT CLUB: Accidentally On Purpose Style!

Fight Club:
Episode 6

Accidentally on Purpose is hitting its stride so to sure not to miss tonight's hilarious sixth episode 'Fight Club'.

After Billie receives a large water bill, Zach tries to help by installing a low flow toilet. Things get crazy after that with the two having their first major fight as roommates. Lots of hilarity ensures including someone getting peed on in the middle of the night...

Accidentally on Purpose has yet to get it's full seasons renewal, though it's looking good, be sure to check out tonight's episode on CBS to help ensure we get to contiue laughing with Jenna Elfman, Jon Foster and the rest of the great cast the rest of the season!

While your waiting for tonights episode here is Nic taking us behind the scenes outside the set of AOP.

Time To Check out "Accidentally on Purpose"

If you have not checked out "Accidentally on Purpose" yet, the re-airing of the pilot tonight on CBS is a good reason to give it a shot. Jenna Elfman and Jon Foster are extremely likable leads and the show does a great job of letting us get to know the characters beyond the shows premise. When I first watched the pilot, though I enjoyed it, I worried the premise could bog the show down. I had little need to worry. Series creator Claudia Lonow and the writers have done a great job of fleshing out the main characters as well as the series supporting cast which include Grant Show, Ashley Jensen, Lennon Parham and Nicolas Wright.

The writing has gotten crisper and more on point with each episode and last weeks episode which included a hilarious 'facebook' discussion would have had anyone who has a fb 'friend' who likes to continually send out cyber kisses and hugs laughing out loud. Lets hope CBS gives the show a full season. It is hard for a tv sit-com to win me over. 'Accidentally on Purpose' has done that with likable characters, great acting and spot on writing. The fact that Jon Foster is so adorable is just an added bonus!

Really Oprah, Really....

I have written a few times since September about Oprah. I fear there is only more weirdness to come. I think Oprah really needs to retire. What good she once did for many is at risk of being overshadowed by the turn her show is taking. Between odd behavior, sensational interviews worthy of Jerry Springer and the fact Oprah has lost touch with her core viewership, is turning her show into an odd spectacle of something once great....that gone horribly gone wrong.

Last weeks two (yeah not one but two) appearances by Mike Tyson was the final turning point to Oprahs hitting the gas on the road down to trash tv. I am not sure if she is running scared of dropping ratings, or like the daytime soaps, her show has become a dinosaur no longer able to grab the viewers (whose attention spans appear to get shorter and shorter). Oprah's attempt at staying relevant is rather disconcerting to watch.

If Oprah wants to 'scoop' family incest with MacKenzie Phillips, talk about Whitney's drug use and provide a platform for Mike Tyson maybe she should just work for Extra or Entertainment Tonight. Oprah's best show this season was Chris Rock plugging his movie 'Good Hair'. Too bad Oprah had nothing to do with it, Rock led the way taking Oprah along for the ride. When Oprah leads the way she heads to the sensational, the sound bite to plug into the commercial. 'Extra Extra' 'Oprah Oprah' Pretty much the same thing these days.

The reason Oprah bothers me so much is how haphazardly she throws around the influence she has. Whether it be her politics, her backing the Olympics or her having on Mike Tyson, many people, especially women are watching and listening. Oprah, who once took this seriously, seems to have abandoned her role as advocate in favor of pushing her own agenda. Too bad many of her viewers have not yet picked up on this.

Neil Patrick Harris: Break A Leg!

As a television fan I look forward each year to the EMMY AWARDS! Usually though I tape so I can watch it quickly later with the FF button. Tonight I think I will actually watch as Neil Patrick Harris is the host. Neil did a great job on this years Tony Awards and we can only hope he belts out a musical number tonight as well! Break A Leg Neil!

Saturday Night Live: Will Forte

Saturday Night Live is once again event television for me. Not only did Tina Fey help bring attention back to the show, but the writing this season has been spot on. The show has had some amazing moments (highlighted to me by the Paul Rudd show). SNL also has it share of great looking and talented guys. Will Forte is one of my favorites, and what a treat to see the adorable backside of this cutie on last nights show. I was all set to cap when I saw the post from DaveID on Dreamcaps (thanks Dave!) so here are some of his caps. My one complaint about this season is the sad departure of Amy Poehler who is off to do a sit-com. I for one am not taking to the female cast member they are now pushing front and center, Kristen Wig, who although talented seems to play the same character over and over again. Kristen is actually very talented, but being overworked on the show and is at risk of becoming annoying soon unless they bring the other females on the show out to do a bit more than back her up.
